The \u201cEqualizing Assessments of Things\u201d chapter of Zhuangzi<\/i> contains many statements about the relativity of words (or concepts) to our use of them: they refer to what they do only because we choose to use them in the ways we do. A thing or a collection of things can be categorized differently \u2013 can be divided by different \u201cboundaries\u201d \u2013 if we choose to do so.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Today your task is to play with categories. With one or more partners \u2014 who can be classmates, friends from outside class, or a combination \u2014 come up with one or more words that you will use to carve the world up differently. Make a distinction where your normal speech would not, or group things together in a single category\/word that we would normally distinguish. For example, what if instead of speaking of “Republicans” and “Democrats,” we used a single word, “Republocrats”? How would this difference in language\/categories influence what you can say or even observe? Use your imagination and change how you speak, at least in a small way.<\/p>
